Corporate travel management isn’t just about flights and hotels, it plays a major role in employee well being and retention. Companies that handle travel poorly risk burning out their best people, while those that get it right can strengthen loyalty and culture.

Corporate travel management has outgrown its old role as logistics. Today, it’s recognised as a lever for culture, engagement and talent retention—especially among younger employees who see travel as a genuine benefit. One recent survey found that 76 per cent of Gen Z employees say business travel influences their decision to stay with their employer. For companies competing in a tight labour market, travel programs are fast becoming part of the employee value proposition.

Travel as a Driver of Growth and Belonging

Travel is also tied to professional growth. Research shows that more than half of Millennial and Gen Z workers consider business travel important for progression, visibility and job satisfaction. In a remote-first workplace, in-person trips provide valuable networking opportunities and help create a sense of belonging that is harder to build on video calls.

Australia is at the forefront of this shift. “Bleisure” travel, where business trips extend into personal time, is booming. More than 60 per cent of travellers are now combining the two more often than before 2019. Cairns has become a standout destination, with trips averaging eight days, twice as long as in Sydney or Melbourne. Brisbane has also seen record visitor nights and billions in spending tied to extended business trips. Flexibility has become essential, and employees who can personalise their journeys are more likely to value travel as part of their role.

Rising Expectations: Wellbeing, Flexibility and Sustainability

Enthusiasm for travel comes with expectations. Younger staff want wellbeing support, clear communication when disruptions occur and the ability to make greener choices. Sustainability is especially important, with employees expecting carbon offset programs, eco-friendly transport options and suppliers that reflect their values. As Deloitte’s Tourism Market Outlook points out, aligning travel programs with ESG goals is no longer optional.

Technology makes this possible. Platforms such as SAP Concur, Concur Travel and Amadeus Cytric give employees more choice while keeping bookings within policy. Mid-office systems like Midoco and reporting tools such as Prime Analytics provide the visibility needed to track spend, measure sustainability and show ROI. By combining flexibility with robust reporting and integration, companies can build corporate travel management systems that support people and performance.

From Cost Control to Culture and Loyalty

The role of the travel manager has expanded beyond cost control. Today, the real task is designing policies that reflect company culture, support wellbeing and align with sustainability targets. Done right, corporate travel management is more than a compliance exercise—it becomes a driver of engagement and loyalty.
